Louis Robert (historian)

Louis Robert ( * February 15, 1904 in Laurière, Haute- Vienne, † 31 May 1985 in Paris) was a French epigraphists, historian, numismatist and archaeologist.

Life

Robert studied from 1924 at the École Normale Supérieure, after he had attended as a student lectures of epigraphist Holleaux Maurice, whom he described as his most important teachers. In 1927 he became a fellow of the École française d' Athènes, 1932 Lecturer ( directeur d' études ) for " Historical Geography of the Greek world and Greek epigraphy " ( géographie historique du monde grec et d' epigraphy grecque ) at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, an activity which he held until 1974. 1939 Robert was the successor of Holleaux also professor of epigraphy et antiquités grecques at the Collège de France, 1948 Member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres. He also belonged scientific academies and societies in many countries. From 1956 to 1964 he headed the Institut français d' archéologie in Istanbul.

Services

Robert was for decades as the " Grand Master " of Greek epigraphy, he devoted nearly five hundred studies in the form of essays, anthologies and several monographs. A main focus was the epigraphy of Asia Minor, where he also conducted extensive field research, two research trips on behalf of the Archaeological Institute of America in 1932 and 1939, along with excavations in Amyzon in Caria ( 1949/1950 ) and in the oracle site Klaros ( 1950-1961, together with Roland Martin). He also devoted himself inscriptions from Greece and other parts of the ancient world, to repeat the pierres errants ( " displaced inscriptions "). Again and again emphasized the value of Robert geographical and culturally informative knowledge for scholars of antiquity. He always tried to embed the inscriptions in their context, and stressed about the vitality of Greek culture during the Hellenistic and Imperial period. Also in the field of ancient numismatics, he published numerous works.

From 1938 to 1984 Robert was with his wife, Jeanne ( 1910-2002 ), who was also otherwise his constant collaborator, the Bulletin épigraphique out an extensive section in the Revue des Études grecques in which all the new releases for Greek Epigraphy displayed annually and partly critically annotated and supplemented. Since Robert's death, the Bulletin is published by a group of scientists.

In his work Robert was able to draw with the ancient sources from a deep familiarity. Based on his knowledge and his card-catalog of scattered published inscriptions he could editors and commentators of inscriptions sometimes demonstrate serious shortcomings, which he did in a sometimes quite sharp tone. However, he had to sometimes suspend also the accusation, self-publish hardly comprehensive syntheses, but mostly detail and special studies. This taken together with his wife in attack corpus of Greek inscriptions of Caria remained with only one published book a torso. However, he also published quite monographs, such as his 1940 published standard work on the gladiators in the east of the Roman Empire.

Roberts teaching at the École Pratique des Hautes Etudes and the Collège de France influenced generations of (not just French ) epigraphers. His publications are used even after decades of research.
