Louis Sachar

Louis Sachar [ sækɚ ] ( born March 20, 1954 in East Meadow, New York) is an American children's author.

Life

Louis Sachar was born on March 20, 1954 in the town of East Meadow, New York and moved with his parents to California when he was nine. He studied economics at the University and taught in the afternoon at the Hillside Elementary School. This experience led to his first children's book Sideways Stories From Wayside School ( 1976). During this time his father died. Later he studied law, worked from 1980 to 1989 part-time as a lawyer and at the same time continued to write children's books. Meanwhile, he has written more than 20 books and writing became his main occupation. His book Holes (1998) was awarded in the United States with prestigious literary awards, including the National Book Award for Young People's Literature, he climbed to # 2 on the American bestseller lists. The film starring Sigourney Weaver was a great success.

Today he lives with his wife Carla, whom he met during his studies and in 1985 married, and his daughter Sherre, who was born in 1987, in California.
