Louisa Anne Meredith

Louisa Anne Meredith ( born July 20, 1812 in Birmingham as Louise Anne Twanley, † October 21, 1895 in Melbourne) was an Australian illustrator and writer.

Life

Louise Anne Twanley was a daughter of the businessman Thomas Twamley and his wife Louisa Ann Meredith. She was taught under the care of their open-minded and art-loving mother at home. Her first poetry collection Poems was a huge success with readers and also got positive reviews in the press.

On April 18, 1839 she married her cousin ( first degree) Charles Meredith ( 1811-1880 ), the youngest son of a naval officer George Meredith and his wife Sarah Westall Hicks. Shortly after the marriage she embarked for Australia, where they lived for two years in New South Wales. The early 1840s the family moved to Tasmania where her husband police chief magistrate in Sorell and was elected to the Tasmanian Legislative Council later. Looking for new motives in the animal and plant world, she traveled the country, whose works are now seeing in the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, and illustrated in their books.

After the death of her husband she moved to Melbourne, where she acquaintance with the most famous artists of the city made ​​in the shortest possible time, to know, among other things William Howitt, Nicholas Chevalier and Julie Visseux. With Georgiana Huntly McCrae and Marianne North, they became close friends. Louisa Anne Meredith died surrounded by her family and was buried beside her husband in Tasmania.
