Louisa is a town in Louisa County and is located in the state of Virginia in the United States.

Geography

The town is located 70 kilometers northwest of Richmond and 40 km east of Charlottesville. Lake Anna extends 20 kilometers to the east. At a distance of 15 kilometers, passing to the south of Interstate 64 highway.

History

Louisa was founded in 1742. The name of the city was just as well that of the County chosen in honor of Princess Louise of Great Britain. After the founding of the Louisa Railroad in 1836, the 1868 Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, and in 1878 finally Chesapeake and Ohio Railway stated that the city initially served mainly as a transshipment point of various goods.

1978, the first block of about 18 kilometers away North Anna nuclear power plant was put into operation. 1980 was followed by a second block. On August 23, 2011, an earthquake in Virginia, whose epicenter was only 11 miles from Louisa and which had a magnitude of 5.8 on the moment magnitude scale occurred. In Louisa there was considerable damage to buildings, but no serious injury. The quake led to the failure of the external power feeds in the North Anna nuclear power plant and the two blocks were cooled with the help of emergency diesel generators. The nuclear power plant went back online in December 2011 and is a major employer for the city.
