Louise Brough

Althea Louise Brough Clapp ( born March 11, 1923 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; † February 3, 2014 in Vista, California ) was an American tennis player.

Biography

She grew up in California, received her first tennis lessons at age 13 and won with 17 years, the American Junior Championships.

Brough won the American Tennis Championships (now the U.S. Open ) in Forest Hills once ( 1947) and was five times in the final. At Wimbledon, she won a total of four times in individual (1948, 1949, 1950 and 1955) and was seven times in the final. In 1950 she won the Australian Open.

With her doubles partner Margaret Osborne won from 1942 to 1950 and from 1955 to 1957 the doubles competition with the ladies at Wimbledon in 1946, 1948, 1949, 1950 and 1954 and the French Championships in the double 1946, 1947 and 1949.

Even in mixed she was with various partners at Grand Slam tournaments very successful ( among other things with Eric Sturgess ) and won numerous titles.

In 1958 she retired from active tennis. 1967 was admitted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
