Louise Fréchette

Louise Fréchette, OC ( * July 16, 1946 in Montreal ) is a Canadian politician and diplomat. From 1998 to 2006 she was Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations.

She studied in Montreal history. At the College of Europe in Bruges she earned a Diploma in Economics. In 1971 Fréchette in the diplomatic service. From 1973 she worked at the Canadian Embassy in Athens. In 1975, she moved to the West European Division of the Canadian Foreign Ministry. In 1979 she was a consultant to the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations in Geneva. In 1982, she was in the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Head of European Affairs. From 1982 to 1983 she was Deputy Head of the Department of Trade Policy. In 1985 she was sent as ambassador to Argentina. In 1988, she became the Vice- Minister for Latin America and the Caribbean, 1991 Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade. As of 1992, it was the administrative head of the UN peacekeeping troops and ambassadors of the United Nations. In 1994 she was Canadian Vice Finance Minister and Deputy Minister of Defence 1995. Kofi Annan appointed Louise Fréchette in January 1998 as his deputy. In 2006, she resigned from her post as Deputy Secretary-General, as it was strongly criticized by the United States because of the oil - for-food program.
