Lourens Ackermann

Lourens " Laurie " Wepener Hugo Ackermann ( born January 14, 1934 in Pretoria) is a South African lawyer. He was from 1994 to 2004 Judge at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa.

Education and professional career

His education was Ackermann at Pretoria Boys' High School, where he graduated in 1950. He then went on to study at the University of Stellenbosch, where he graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts. Because of its good services he was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Worcester College, University of Oxford. There he became also a Bachelor of Arts before he returned to the University of Stellenbosch to get there awarded the Bachelor of Laws. In 1958 he settled at the Bar Association in Pretoria as a lawyer and practiced there until 1980. Early as 1976, he held several positions as a judge on time, but was only in 1980 for full-time judges appointed to the Transvaal Provincial Division. He held until September 1987 this office. Then he received a call to the after Harry Frederick Oppenheimer named, newly founded Oppenheimer Chair in Human Rights at the University of Stellenbosch. Besides his work there, he held visiting professorships at Columbia University and at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg. The end of 1992 he retired from the university service and was appointed in January 1993 to a judgeship at the Cape of Good Hope Provincial Division. In August 1994, Nelson Mandela appointed him judge of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa. During his tenure there he was responsible for, among other things with the administration and the expansion of the court library. Age Half Ackermann joined in 2003 by his judge post back.

Others

Ackermann is married to Denis Ackermann with whom he has three children and five grandchildren. Between 1988 and 2003 he represented South Africa in the Rhodes Trust. In 2000, he worked as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law.
