Loutraki

Loutraki (Greek Λουτράκι (n. sg. ) ) Is a Greek city about 4 km north-east of Corinth in the Prefecture of Corinthia with about 10,000 inhabitants. It is a part and the administrative seat of the municipality Loutraki - Perachora.

The name of Loutraki derives from the Greek word for source. Within Greece, Loutraki is also famous for its spring water, which is bottled here in a large scale and sold nationwide.

History

About 3 km outside the city center, there are remains of a Roman Villa ( Roman Villa of Katounistra ), suggesting a settlement at that time. The modern Loutraki is probably to be identified with the ancient city Therma or Thermai ( ancient Greek Θέρμα, Θέρμαι ), which is mentioned in Xenophon.

1847 caused a notice in Italy about the therapeutic benefits of bathing in the natural hot springs of Loutraki an influx of settlers in the area, making the modern Loutraki was designed. 1928 Loutraki was completely destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt afterwards. A large park was created with the debris of houses destroyed by land reclamation from the sea area. In 1981, another strong earthquake occurred in the area, but with less severe damage.

Location

The mountains dominate the north, northeast and the southeast of Loutraki. A monastery, Osios Patapios, located on the Geraneia mountain about ten miles from Loutraki. From there you have a great view of the isthmus and the Gulf of Corinth.

Loutraki is a primarily touristy town. The Casino (Club Hotel Casino Loutraki ) is one of the largest in Europe and widely known. The city has many schools, churches, banks, hotels and bathing establishments. The connection to Athens and Corinth is by bus and passed through a railway line ( 80 km ), which was set as part of the austerity measures in 2011.
