Lovozero Massif

The Lovozero Tundra (Russian Ловозерские тундры, German transcription: Lowosjorskije tundry ) is a mountain range between the two lakes Lovozero in the east and in the west Umbosero located in the center of the Kola Peninsula in the Murmansk Oblast in Russia. The name comes from the same lake. The region is also called Lowosjorskije. The Lovozero Tundra is an open to the east horseshoe-shaped ridge that which includes the Seidosero Lake. On the mountain slopes grow mainly spruce and pine. The mountains reach the mountain Angwundastschorr 1120 m at its highest point. The area around the lake is inhabited by Seidosero seeds. Many place names are not of Russian origin.

Geology

The massif is located above a complex of agpaitischen and hyperagpaitischen rocks. These contain minerals such as eudialyte, loparite ( an ore of niobium and tantalum), natrosilite ( anhydrous sodium silicates ) and others. At least 105 minerals were found in the area, 39 of which were first discovered here (type locality). The few other regions with similar geology and mineralogy are the neighboring Chibinen (west of Umbosero Lake located ), the Ilímaussaq intrusion in southwestern Greenland and Mont Saint- Hilaire in the eastern Canadian region of Montérégie.

Tourism

The area is relatively easily accessible from the railway line. In winter the region can be achieved by the Chibinen out over the frozen Umbosero Lake, in the summer lead mountain roads and trails there.
