Low Energy Ion Ring

The Low Energy Ion Ring ( Leir ) is a particle accelerator operated since 2006 for lead ions at CERN with a circumference of 78.5 meters. 3 with it the provided by the linear accelerator with 4.2 MeV LINAC lead ions are combined into packets ( bunches ) and accelerated to an energy of 72 MeV. These are then the Proton Synchrotron (PS ) in the Vorbeschleunigerkette the Large Hadron Collider (LHC ) is fed further accelerated and brought to collision in the LHC. The Low Energy Ion Ring was created from the 1982 to 1996 for experiments with antimatter used Low Energy Antiproton Ring ( LEAR ), which, among other things for the first time managed to produce some atoms of antihydrogen. The tasks of LEAR are taken from the Antiproton Decelerator (AD) since 2000.
