Lowe's shrew

Chodsigoa parca is a shrew of the genus Chodsigoa. It occurs in parts of the People's Republic of China as well as in the northern and eastern Myanmar, northern Thailand and northern Vietnam.

Features

With a head-body length of 6.8 to 8.4 centimeters and a weight from 7 to 9.5 grams Chodsigoa parca one of the medium-sized shrew species. The tail reaches a length of 74-108 mm, which is significantly longer than the body, the hind foot is 15 to 20 millimeters long and the ear length is 8 to 10 millimeters. The dorsal and ventral color is slate gray with brownish elements, whereby the belly is lighter. In comparison to the very similar looking Chodsigoa smithii type is colored a bit smaller and lighter.

The skull of Chodsigoa parca has a length of 19 to 21 millimeters, the skull is clearly bulged. Compared to Chodsigoa smithii the snout area is narrower and tapers less in the area of the premaxilla. Like all species of the genus has the kind in the maxilla per half an incisor ( incisor ) and then three unicuspid teeth, a Vorbackenzahn ( premolar ) and three molars ( Molar ). In the mandible, it has, however, a single canine ( canine ) behind the incisor. Overall, the animals thus have a set of teeth from 28 teeth. The roots of teeth are stained red as with most Rotzahnspitzmäusen.

Dissemination

Chodsigoa parca comes in parts of the People's Republic of China in the provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces as well as in the northern and eastern Myanmar, northern Thailand and northern Vietnam. In addition, deposits are accepted in Laos, where the species has not yet been demonstrated.

The altitudinal distribution of the kind are between 1500 and 3000 meters. This heights from 1500 to 2000 meters in the area of Mount Tay Con Linh II were documented near the Chinese border in Vietnam, Yunnan animals were detected up to 3000 meters altitude. To Chodsigoa smithii the species lives largely allopatric, but for at least one locality is a sympatric occurrence detected. In Vietnam, it comes at the same location as the first described from there Chodsigoa caovansunga.

Way of life

Over the life of this kind are, as with most other Asian shrews only very limited data. Like all shrews also Chodsigoa parca feeds on invertebrates and lives on the ground. In Vietnam, the animals were found in bamboo forests.

System

Chodsigoa parca is classified as a separate species within the genus Chodsigoa consisting of eight kinds. The first scientific description comes from Glover Morrill Allen from 1923 on the basis of an individual from the west of China's Yunnan province. The species was classified as a subspecies extended period of Chodsigoa smithii, since the 1980s, however, they again received species status.

Within the species, two other subspecies are distinguished addition to the nominate Chodsigoa parca parca with Chodsigoa parca furva and Chodsigoa parca lowei.

Threat and protection

Chodsigoa parca is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN ) due to the relatively large distribution area and population size is assumed to be not at risk ( " least concern "). Concrete inventory figures and threats for the species are not known; a potential hazard exists due to the clearing of forests.
