Lowell Fulson

Lowell Fulson (* March 31, 1921 in Tulsa, Oklahoma; † March 6, 1999 in Long Beach, California ) was an American blues guitarist and singer.

Life and work

Fulson was born on a reservation of the Choctaw Indians in Tulsa; his grandfather was a Choctaw. He played early music, gospel and country first, before he discovered his love of the blues.

With 18 years Fulson replaced the blues guitarist Chester Burnett (better known as Howlin ' Wolf) in the band of Texas Alexander. During his service in the United States Navy from 1943 he founded his first band in Guam. After the war Fulson moved to California, where he founded a band in which the young Ray Charles played for some time.

Here Fulson was launched in June 1946 in San Francisco, his first single Crying Blues on. In Oakland two parts of the River Blues Trio with Eldridge McCarty ( piano) and Big Dad In the same month emerged as Fulson (Bob Johnson) ( bass). In October 1948, he had his first hit with the Three O'Clock Blues, which reached up to third in the rhythm & blues charts. A first cover version by Blue Classic Everyday I Have the Blues was by Lowell Fulson on July 18, 1949 ( Cast: Lloyd Glenn piano, Billy Hadnott bass and Bob received the Harvey- drums ), came in May 1950 on the market ( Rank # 3) and blues records were from the music magazine Billboard at the Rhythm & most sold out at Rank 10. It was followed by other hits like Blues Shadows ( August 1950, his only number -one hit ). This success motivated Fulson Lowell Fulson establishing the Orchestra, a seven -piece band, some Ray Charles starred in on piano. One of these titles with Ray Charles on piano was The Snow Is Falling, recorded in November 1951. In December 1953, Fulson moved on to Aladdin Records, where he stayed only until 1954. In September 1954 he went to Checker Records, where on 27 September 1954, he recorded the classic Reconsider Baby. Many of these songs were about of B.B. King, Elvis Presley and Otis Redding gecovert which thereby achieved greater commercial success in part.

1993 won five Fulson W. C. Handy Awards. His album Them Update Blues ( 1995) was nominated for a Grammy. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1993. Lowell Fulson died in 1999 from kidney failure as a result of his diabetes. In 2010, his album Hung Down Head was also included in the Blues Hall of Fame. His song Reconsider Baby is listed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 500 songs that shaped rock ' n ' roll.
