Lowell Thomas, Jr.

Lowell Thomas, Jr. ( born October 6, 1923 in London ) is a former American politician ( Republican), who held the office of Lieutenant Governor of Alaska from 1974 to 1978.

Career

Thomas worked as a film and television producer, along with his father, the reporter and author Lowell Thomas, on several projects. For political office, he applied for the first time in 1962 as a Republican candidate for Alaska's only seat in the House of Representatives of the United States, but there he was defeated by Democratic incumbent Ralph Julian Rivers. Two years later he re-entered against Rivers and increased its share of the vote, but failed again.

In the early 1970s Thomas was then elected to the Senate from Alaska. From 1974 to 1978 he was finally Vice- Governor of the State under Governor Jay Hammond.

Today, Lowell Thomas Jr. remains active as a bush pilot and environmental activist and continues to live in Alaska.
