Lower Hutt

Island

The city lies at the southern end of the valley of the Hutt River, northeast of Wellington City. The valley of the Hutt is wider away from the sea. Today's town center is this almost flat triangle that is in the south, the widest side of the Pacific, on the other two sides by hills that approach ever closer to the river is limited. The river between the hills must pass wind at the narrowest point ( the Taita Gorge ).

History

In 1839 a ship reached the New Zealand Company, responsible for the colonization of New Zealand organization, the area to negotiate with Māori about the immigration of white settlers.

However, few months after the colonization of the river flooded the city and the settlers moved to Thorndon, now an inner city district of Wellington. 1846 took place confrontations between the Māori and the whites, the Pākehā as part of the New Zealand wars here. As of 1855, the upscale after the Wairarapa earthquake region could be resettled.

An upheaval experienced the district with the construction of the railway from Wellington in 1874.
