Lower Left Rhine Railway

The links Niederrheinische route is a two-track main line south of Geldern in the Lower Rhine from Cologne to Kranenburg and Nijmegen ( NL).

The links Niederrheinische route can be divided into the 55 km long electrified and through multi-pronged section of Cologne Neuss to Krefeld and the subsequent 65 km long, non-electrified and partially single-track section Krefeld- Kleve.

From Cologne to Neuss runs the S -Bahn line S 11 parallel to the track and leaving it only in the Cologne district of choral hamlet in a loop, partly in deep level.

History

Section Köln- Kleve

The links Niederrheinische track was taken from the Cologne - Crefelder Railway Company (CCE ) on November 15, 1855 between Cologne and Neuss in operation and on 26 January 1856 - extended until Krefeld - on the direct route via Fischeln. It was only on 23 August 1866, the current route via Krefeld - Oppum was opened. After the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft ( RhE ) had taken a contract dated 11 November 1859, the Cologne - Crefelder Railway Company and its distance from Cologne to Krefeld on July 1, 1860 the requirement for the extension of the left of the Rhine route to the north was with created a connection to the Dutch railway network, and the Dutch ports. The section to Kleve was opened on 1 March 1863.

As part of the expansion program for the power of the German Federal Railroad in 1970 was intended to use a several decades kept free but not constructed line between the line and the western Introduction to Cologne Main Station. For trains from the Ruhr area, which further drove over Cologne Main Station on the new Cologne - great- Gerau and southern Germany, should thus account for a change of direction in Cologne.

Section Kleve - Netherlands

Of greater importance was the on April 19, 1865 for freight and on April 21, 1865 for passenger opened 10 km long continuation of the Griethausen railway bridge, the ferry Spyck wave and Elten to the Dutch border. For this, the RhE had the Nederlandse Rhijnspoorweg (NRS ) encouraged the already operated a railway from Rotterdam and Amsterdam via Utrecht and Arnhem to the Dutch-German border. There she had the Cologne - Minden railway from Emmerich to Oberhausen ( Holland route) since 1856 connection. However, the Cologne - Minden railway connections were missing in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

This fact prompted the NRS, with the Rhenish Railway, which now number over Bingen had to connect to the network in southern Germany to talk about a rail link via Kleve. The trial of the two companies, in favor of the Rhenish Railway to reach a concession for the construction of a line from Kleve Nijmegen to Arnhem in the Dutch government failed at the basic attitude of the Dutch government. Even the offer of the Rhenish Railway to build the great bridges over the Waal and the Rhine at its own expense, returned no results. Probably was the protection of their own navigation on the Rhine in the foreground and the fact that the NRS was mainly controlled by English capital, was at that time for the promotion of the application for an additional rail link hindrance for the Dutch government.

Until the nationalization of the company of the entire freight and passenger of RhE ran to the Dutch North Sea ports via Kleve - Zevenaar. Afterwards (1912 ) of the ferry traffic was stopped and dismantled the track ramps on both banks. The passengers were ferried to a steam boat. During the First World War, the train has been reduced to two pairs of trains. After the war, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) terminated the contract and the German State Railroad Company (DRG ) operating the train and ferry service until 31 August 1926. Around 1930, the tracks of the line wave - Elten were on the right side of the Rhine degraded. In contrast, the passenger and freight traffic until 1960 was linksrheinisch carried out to a lying directly on the Rhine in Spyck oil mill until 1987. At this time, this stretch was decommissioned.

As of September 9, 1865 a further compound of Cleves was taken to Nijmegen in operation. To the Dutch railway network Nijmegen was connected until 1879. From 18 September 1965, instead of double-tracked down only one track on the section between Kleve and the border. On the route to Nijmegen run since 1991 no more passenger trains, since 1999 she has been out of operation. By 31 December 1991, the freight - Kleve Kranenburg has been set. Since 27 April 2008, the section of Kleve Kranenburg is used in the Netherlands Groesbeek for a leisure traffic with Handcars.

S -Bahn

Take the S- Bahn line S11 from Cologne Hbf to Köln- Chorweiler the first S -Bahn line from Cologne was put into operation on 1 June 1975. On May 22, 1977, the new section went to Cologne choir hamlet north into operation, which was performed by the choir underground hamlet. As in June 1985, was the extension to Cologne Worringen where the S -Bahn route is level inched into the main line in operation, the S was performed 11 to Neuss. A result, the networks of the S-Bahn Rhein- Ruhr and Rhine -Sieg were first linked.

Intersections

In west-east direction of the links Niederrheinische line was crossed by now disused railway connections in Goch, funds and Kempen. The North Brabantsch - Duitsche Spoorweg - Maatschappij ( NBDS ) ran her long-distance trains London - Berlin and London - Hamburg from Boxtel in the Netherlands Gennep and Goch to Wesel ( Boxteler train). In money, the Paris - Hamburg Railway cruised to its portion of Venlo on Wesel to Hamburg, from the Cologne - Minden railway in 1874 put into operation. In Kempen was from 1867 a connection via Kaldenkirchen to Venlo. The 1901 Built to 1902 schmalspurige Geldernsche circular path, the west opened up the agricultural area of the state railway of Kempen Straelen to Kevelaer, could only exist until 1934.

Service offer

The links Niederrheinische route is from Monday to Friday during the day and every 30 minutes evenings, weekends and holidays at hourly intervals in the section Sea Busch Osterath in transport - operated Dusseldorf - Kleve from Nier -Express ( RE 10 ) Kleve - Krefeld. In Krefeld every hour there are connections to the Rhine -Münster -Express ( RE 7 ) Krefeld - Neuss - Cologne - Wuppertal - Hagen - Hamm - Münster - Rheine. Since the distance from Kleve to funds is single-track, the trains of the Nier - Express at the crossing stations Bedburg -Hau and Weeze in the direction Krefeld each have four minutes stay. In the opposite direction, the total travel time is eight minutes shorter. For every hour the encounters in Weeze omitted. Despite the classification as a regional express the Nier - Express between sea - Busch Osterath and Kleve serves all stations. The breakpoint of Goch hamlet Pfalzdorf is no longer served due to poor profitability. The average speed of only 66 km / h The single track sections lead also when a train on the track has been delayed, often to further delays because the train from the opposite direction must then wait at the corresponding crossing station and in its turn attracts delays by itself. All stations along the route have at least two tracks and can serve as a crossing station.

Will be conducted of rail transport by DB Regio NRW ( RE 7 ), and the North Western Railway (RE 10).

For the Rhine -Münster -Express trains will be turning four double-deck cars and clothing used by electric locomotives of the DB Class 112.
