Lowndes County (Alabama)

The Lowndes County is a county located in the state of Alabama in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hayneville.

Geography

The County is located in south-central Alabama and has an area of 1878 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Autauga County, Montgomery County, Crenshaw County, Butler County, Wilcox County and Dallas County.

History

Lowndes County was formed on January 20, 1830 from parts of Montgomery County, Dallas County and Butler County. It was named after a native of South Carolina statesman William Lowndes.

According to the census of 2000, there were 13,473 people in Lowndes County. Of these, 47 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 4,909 households and 3,588 families.
