F2

The Loy Yang power station is operated with a lignite coal-fired power plant in the Australian state of Victoria. It is located near the town of Traralgon, used to cover the base load and produces about 1/3 the electrical energy required in the state of Victoria.

The power plant consists of two units, Loy Yang A and Loy Yang B with a total capacity of 3,150 MW. Loy Yang A, owned by the Australian Gas Light Company and TEPCO, consists of four power plant units with an installed capacity of 4 × 525 MW. Loy Yang B, owned by International Power, has two power plant units with 2 × 525 MW.

The brown coal for the operation is obtained from a nearby open pit, in which four bucket wheel around the clock promoting lignite. 30 million tons of coal are mined for the operation of the power plant per year. The mine pointed in 2010 to a depth of 200 m and an area of approximately 2 km by 3 km. The coal deposits in the Latrobe Valley region are estimated at the current feed rate to about 1,300 years. The annual emissions of the entire power plant complex is estimated at 21.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2), making the Loy Yang power station is one of the largest CO2 emitters in Australia.
