Loyola de Palacio
Ignacia de Loyola de Palacio del Valle- Lersundi ( born September 16, 1950 in Madrid, † December 13, 2006 ibid ) was a Spanish politician (PP) and Vice- President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Transport and Energy under Romano Prodi (1999 -2004 ).
Life
Loyola de Palacio had a two year older sister, Ana de Palacio del Valle- Lersundi, former Foreign Minister of Spain.
De Palacio studied law at the Complutense University of Madrid and was for many years in the Spanish conservative People's Party ( Partido Popular) active. From 1996 to 1999 she was Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in the government of José María Aznar.
In the European elections in 1999 she became a member of the European Parliament. However, few weeks later, she retired again from the Parliament, as it became the Vice President of the European Commission with the appointment of the Prodi Commission, where she also was responsible for the areas of transport and energy. These offices they had held until the appointment of the Barroso Commission I 2004. Under her successor, Jacques Barrot, she was one of six coordinators for the Priority axes of the trans-European transport network, where she was responsible for the Priority axis No. 6 Lyon-Trieste-Divaca/Koper-Divaca-Ljubljana-Budapest-Csop.
She made 2004 a scandal when she wished Cuban rulers Fidel Castro 's death, after he had broken his left knee and the right upper arm in a fall. This incident reinforced their isolation within the European Commission.
The politician regarded as conservative values died on 13 December 2006 in the late evening at the age of 56 years in a Madrid hospital of complications from cancer.
