Ignacia de Loyola de Palacio del Valle- Lersundi ( born September 16, 1950 in Madrid, † December 13, 2006 ibid ) was a Spanish politician (PP) and Vice- President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Transport and Energy under Romano Prodi (1999 -2004 ).

Life

Loyola de Palacio had a two year older sister, Ana de Palacio del Valle- Lersundi, former Foreign Minister of Spain.

De Palacio studied law at the Complutense University of Madrid and was for many years in the Spanish conservative People's Party ( Partido Popular) active. From 1996 to 1999 she was Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in the government of José María Aznar.

In the European elections in 1999 she became a member of the European Parliament.
