Lozen

Lozen ( = skilful horse thief ) (* in the late 1840s; †? ) Was a warrior of Chihenne Apaches. She was the younger sister of Chief Victorio. The Chihenne with the Bedonkohe, Chokonen and Nednhi are collectively often referred to as Chiricahua, while the Chihenne acted completely independently of the other groups ( Gotahs ).

The young Lozen was courted by many warriors. With about 16 years appeared a stranger in her village, she fell in love. But this again left the village and Lozen swore never to marry. Instead, she was one of the few Apache women who opted for a walk as a warrior. She was superior to many warriors especially in dealing with horses, but also in the roping and horse stealing. In addition to their martial skills they should have possessed the ability to predict the location of the enemy and to heal the sick, they decreed therefore Inda - ce -ho- ndi (English Enemies Against Power). Lozen was recorded at the Apache the status of a holy woman and was in the Council of the warrior.

After a long struggle against the advancing U.S. troops withdrew, the Chi -hen- ne - Apaches in 1871 in the San Carlos Reservation. In 1880 they seized half starved to escape. Lozen said to have stolen the necessary horses. That same summer, the Chi -hen- ne suffered great losses during a battle with the whites. Also Victorio was fatally injured. There followed years of a last desperate war against the whites. Lozen fought sometimes together with the Bedonkohe shaman Geronimo in the group. In September 1886, it had to surrender. Lozen was exiled with other Apache warriors to Florida.
