Lu (state)

Lu (Chinese鲁国, Pinyin Lǔ Guó; WG: Lu Kuo ) was an ancient Chinese government, which lay in what is now Shandong province during the time of the Spring and Autumn Annals.

The state was created in the 10th century BC and went under 256 BC.

Lu was in the southwest and center of today's Shandong province. It bordered on the two most powerful states in the north Qi and Chu in the south. The capital was Qufu.

Despite its relatively small size Lu was an army of Qi in 684 BC to fight back. The political power of the state was later divided between the families Jisun, Mengsun and Shusun. In the year 256 BC Lu was annexed by Chu.

Lu was the home of Confucius.
