Luang Prabang Province

Luang Prabang (Lao ຫລວງ ພະ ບາງ ) is a province in the north of Laos. The provincial capital is the city of Luang Prabang.

Geography

Neighbouring provinces (from north clockwise): Phongsali, Oudomxay, Sayaburi, Vientiane, Xieng Khouang and Houaphan. In the north east borders the province of Luang Prabang Dien Bien of Vietnam.

Traffic

The province has in the provincial capital of Luang Prabang international airport (IATA: LPQ, ICAO: VIIb ) with direct connections to:

  • Laos: Phongsali, Vientiane, Phonsavan ( Xieng Khouang province )
  • Thailand: Bangkok, Chiang Mai,
  • Cambodia: Siem Reap
  • Vietnam: Hanoi

Luang Prabang is connected by the National Road 13 with Vang Vieng and Vientiane, along the national road 1 with Muang Xay. The National Highway 13 leads on down to Cambodia.

Also the Mekong River, a major transport connection. Huay Xai upriver along the Thai border (opposite the Thai district of Chiang Khong ) can be achieved, for example, from the provincial capital with a slow boat in two days, with usually a stop in Pakbeng ( Oudomxay province ) is inserted.
