Lubomyr Husar

Ljubomyr Cardinal Husar MSU (Ukrainian Любомир Гузар, scientific transliteration Ljubomyr Huzar, also Lubomyr Husar, born February 26, 1933, Lvov, Poland) is a retired Major Archbishop of the united with Rome Greek Catholic Church of Ukraine and cardinal.

Life

Husar was born in Poland, but his parents left their home in 1944 and emigrated with him to the United States a. He studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and at the Jesuit Fordham University in New York City. On March 30, 1958 he was ordained a priest in the Eparchy Stanford Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Following this he worked until 1969 at the College of the Eparchy as a lecturer; 1966 to 1969 he has also held a priesthood in Kerhonkson.

1969 Hussar went to Rome to continue his studies for three years; He received his doctorate at the Pontifical Urban University in Catholic theology in 1972. In 1973 he entered the studio monastery in Santa Maria di Grottaferrata, near Rome, whose head he was in 1974. Four years later, in 1978, Husar was appointed Archimandrite of his order for Europe and America.

On April 2, 1977 he was ordained in Rome by the then Major Archbishop of Lviv, Jossyf Cardinal Slipyj, bishop - a consecration without which the then Pope Paul VI .. consent shall be considered as the cause of the discrepancies disagreements over the former Ostpolitik of the Vatican. Co-consecrators at the consecration were the Ukrainian Catholic Bishop of Melbourne, Ivan Prasko and the Ukrainian Catholic Bishop of Toronto, Isidore Borecky. In 1978, when Bishop Husar went back to the Ukraine; among other things, he was instrumental in the founding of the Ternopil Studio monastery.

The official papal confirmation was Husars Episcopate in 1996 under Pope John Paul II, who appointed him on 22 February 1996 as Titular Bishop of Nisa in Lycia and appointed auxiliary bishop in Lviv. Already in 1994 elected him to this office, the Ukrainian Synod of Bishops.

On 25 January 2001 Husar was appointed Major Archbishop of Lviv. A day later, on January 26, John Paul II elevated him to the Cardinal stand. As a cardinal priest, he received the titular church of Santa Sofia a Via Boccea.

In 2001, Husar replied his U.S. citizenship.

From 23 to 27 June 2001, he received Pope John Paul II at its sole Ukraine travel.
