Lucignano

Lucignano is a municipality with 3638 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Arezzo, in Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 45 km ². It is located about 25 km southwest of Arezzo and 70 km southeast of Florence in the heart of the Chiana Valley in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone E, 2248 GR / G.

The districts include Croce (281 meters altitude, about 270 inhabitants) and Pieve Vecchia (280 meters altitude, about 180 inhabitants). As a special unit applies Lago del Calcione (362 meters altitude).

The neighboring municipalities are Foiano della Chiana, Marciano della Chiana, Monte San Savino, Rapolano Terme ( SI) and Sinalunga (SI).

History

Originated from the cultures of Villanova and the Etruscans, the place was taken in the 1st century BC by the Romans under Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix. Lucullus was founded here by a Roman military camp and named the place from now on in his honor Lucinianum, which is derived the modern place- name. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the sphere of influence of Arezzo. In the battle of Campaldino Arezzo lost against Florence in 1289, and thus the rule over the place which afterwards belonged to Perugia and the Papal State. From the time of Perugian the grip comes even today as an emblem. In the 14th century Lucignano was occupied by the Republic of Siena, who built the city wall and the Rocca Senese built. The Sienese occupation ended in 1554 with the Battle of Scannagallo ( Battaglia di Scannagallo, also Battaglia di Marciano called ). Here, the Republic of Florence defeated under Gian Giacomo Medici, the Republic of Siena under Piero Strozzi.
