Lucius Aurelius Avianius Symmachus

Lucius Aurelius Symmachus Avianius ( signo Phosphorius ) ( † 376 ) was a late ancient Roman senator.

Symmachus was a follower of the traditional gods cults, among other things, he was several times Pontifex maior. As Prefect annonae the highly respected Symmachus was also responsible for the grain supply of Rome (340 /50). 360 he was vicar urbis Romae, a subordinate of the praetorian prefect of Italy and his deputy. 361 he was part of a delegation that was sent by the Senate to the then emperor Constantius II; apparently he was often entrusted with embassies to the court. Emperor Julian ( 361-363 ) to have him very much appreciated.

Symmachus held 364/64 the office of city prefect of Rome. He was evidently very wealthy. For the year 377 he was assigned as Consul, but he died before. His son, the famous orator Quintus Aurelius Symmachus and politicians, praised his rhetorical talent and his poetry ( 1,3,4 letters ).
