Ludhiana ( Punjabi: ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ) is a major city in the state of Punjab in India with a population of 1.6 million inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is the capital of the district of the same name. The river Satluj was formerly close to the city, but has moved further its course in time to the north.

In the industrial city of steel and textile industry tools and sewing machines, mopeds, bicycles and agricultural tools are produced. It is a commercial center with country grain market ( Mandi ) and is a major transshipment point for freight traffic. Seasonal workers from other Indian states usually arrive first here, before they continue their journey further. In the area irrigated farming is done.

A serious problem caused by the industrial facilities that meet the most part, despite government regulations, certain environmental conditions, the smog that hangs over the metropolitan area and in population Ludihana physical diseases and ailments such as Dyspnea causes.

Ludhiana is the cultural center of the area with theaters, museums, cinemas, galleries and transport hub of the region (road, railway, airport). The Grand Trunk Road, connecting the cities of Amritsar and Delhi, runs through Ludhiana. 1895 Christian Medical College was opened in 1962, the Agricultural University.

1480 was founded by the Princess Lodhi of Delhi Ludhiana. 1845 an important battle in the First Sikh War took place in the town and its surroundings.

Worth seeing are the Bilwanwali Masjid Mosque and the Alawal Khan Mausoleum.

The local football club JCT Mills Football Club plays in the Indian Football League.
