Ludovico Roncalli

Ludovico Antonio Roncalli (* 1654, † 1713) was an Italian nobleman and composer.

Life and work

Ludovico Roncalli was born into a noble family based in Bergamo. Certainly he was in his hometown with the operating there guitarist Giovanni Battista Granata (around 1620-1687 ) in contact. Roncalli published 1692 in Bergamo, a collection of suites for 5 -course baroque guitar, Capricci armonici sopra la chitarra spagnola ( "Harmonic caprices for Spanish guitar "). Many pieces are close to the French style, as found for example in Robert de Visée.

The works were transkiribiert 1881 by Oscar Chilesotti ( 1848-1916 ) for modern 6 -string guitar. The work consists of nine full suites. It is commonly found in guitar schools. Bruno Henze transcribed the work in 1955 in the VEB Verlag Friedrich Hofmeister Leipzig. The original appeared in 1982 as a facsimile with Paolo Paolini in Florence.

A Passacaglia in G minor was borrowed from Ottorino Respighi for his Airs anciens et danses.
