Ludwig Mond

Ludwig Mond ( born March 7, 1839 in Kassel, † December 11, 1909 in London ) was a German - British chemist and industrialist.

Life

Ludwig Mond was born into a Jewish family. He was the son of the merchant Meier Bear Moon ( honorary grave in the Jewish cemetery in Kassel) and grew up in Kassel. He attended the Higher Commercial School ( Polytechnic ) his hometown and studied chemistry in Marburg and Heidelberg, including Hermann Kolbe and Robert Bunsen. During his studies in Heidelberg, he became a member of the local Corps Rhenaniastraße. He married Frida, born Lowenthal.

In 1862 he settled in Widnes in England, where it was manufactured in a factory soda by the Leblanc process. From 1862 to 1864 he directed the construction of a soda factory in Utrecht. After purchasing a license for the production of soda by the newly developed Solvay process he founded in 1873 together with the JT Brunner Brunner Mond Comp. in Winnington, Northwich, Cheshire, from 1881 Brunner- moon AG, whose technical director he was. In 1926 the company merged with others to form the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI ). Moon became involved, among other things, as Vice President of the Chemical Society in London and the Royal Institution of Great Britain. The Royal Chemical Society awards the Ludwig Mond Award (formerly Ludwig Mond Lectureship ) annually.

Moon was also important art collector and patron. His art collection is now in the National Gallery in London. His hometown Kassel he gave her foundations. This honored him by naming a street, which was reversed at the time of National Socialism. After 1945, the current Ludwig- moon - street was named after him.

Honorary doctorates from the Universities of Padua (1892 ) and Heidelberg (1896 ), D. Sc. ( hon. ) in Oxon, Order of the Crown of Italy.

Family

Ludwig Mond left two sons who played a role in public life:

  • Sir Robert Ludwig Mond (1867-1938), chemist and archaeologist;
  • Sir Alfred Moritz Moon, from 1928 Lord Melchett of Langford ( 1868-1930 ), MP, British Minister of Health from 1921 to 1922, named after the "World Controller" Mustapha moon in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
