Ludwig Philippson

Ludwig Philippson ( born December 28, 1811 in Dessau, † December 29, 1889 in Bonn ) was a German writer and rabbi.

Life

Philippson was the son of Moses Philippson (1775-1814), who in Dessau had a Hebrew printing press and also own writings and books published. After the early death of his father, his older brother Phoebus Philippson Moses took care of his education. He was taken on April 9, 1826 in the Latin school in Halle. After leaving examination ( Abitur) Philippson took in 1829 on a study of classical philology in Berlin where he attended lectures until 1833. Initial work he published under his brother's name. He received his doctorate with the work De humani corporis internarum partium cognitione Aristotelis cum Platonis sententia Comparata. 1833 appointed him to the Jewish community of Magdeburg, first as a preacher and as a rabbi. He consecrated on 31 August 1850, the new synagogue to Eisleben and on 14 September 1851, the Old Synagogue Magdeburg solemnly.

In 1837 he founded the Allgemeine Zeitung of Judaism, which he edited until his death in 1889, and edited. The newspaper became one of the most important newspapers of liberal Jews in Germany. She next appeared in a weekly, then daily 14 - rhythm to its setting in April 1922, making it the longest lasting German -language Jewish journal. The Berlin Society of Friends was Philippson on since 1839. The historian Martin Philippson and the geographer Alfred Philippson were his sons.
