Ludwig Redtenbacher

Ludwig Redtenbacher ( born June 10, 1814 in Kirchdorf an der Krems, Upper Austria, † February 8, 1876 in Vienna ) was an Austrian entomologist and physician. He was the brother of the chemist Josef Redtenbacher.

Ludwig Redtenbacher studied from 1833 to 1838 medicine at the University of Vienna, 1843, he was awarded his doctorate for Dr. med. He worked from 1835 as an intern in 1847 as an assistant at the insect collection of Hofnaturalienkabinetts. Redtenbacher was 1851/52 professor in Prague and in 1860 director of the Natural History Museum in Vienna. He was considered the most important Austrian Koleopterologe his time.

The Redtenbachergasse in Vienna Ottakring and Hernals is named after him since 1894.
