Ludwig Struve

Gustav Ludwig Wilhelm von Struve (born 20 Oktoberjul / November 1 1858greg in Pulkovo in St Petersburg, .. † November 4, 1920 in Sevastopol ) was a Baltic German mathematician and astronomer.

Life

Struve was the son of the astronomer Otto Wilhelm von Struve and brother of the astronomer Hermann von Struve. In the years 1876-1880 he studied at the University of Dorpat ( now Tartu in Estonia) mathematics and astronomy. He then worked at the observatory of Dorpat.

In the years 1883-1885 Struve studied in Berlin, Milan and Leipzig. He finished his studies in 1886 from in Dorpat. The following year he received his doctorate there as well. While he continued to work at the local observatory, he prepared his habilitation.

In 1894 he took then as associate professor for the subjects of astronomy and geodesy a professorship at the University of Kharkov in Ukraine and took over the management of the local observatory. In 1897 he was appointed full professor. His main work was to study the terrestrial precession.

In Kharkov was his son, the future astronomer Otto Struve, born.

In 1919 he became professor at the Tauris University in Simferopol.

His son Otto served during the Russian Revolution as an officer in the White Army.

On November 4, 1920 Ludwig von Struve died at the age of 62 years in Sevastopol. He was with his son on the run from the Red troops.
