Ludwig von Westphalen

Johann Ludwig von Westphalen ( born July 11, 1770 in Bornum am Elm, county Helmstedt, Duchy of Brunswick, † March 3, 1842 in Trier, Rhineland ) was a Prussian Government and mentor of Karl Marx.

Family

He was the youngest son of Philip Edler von Westphalen (1724-1792) and Jane (Jean) Wishart of Pittarow ( 1742-1811 ). He was by his mother with the family of Argyll and Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll related.

Westphalen married his first marriage on July 4, 1798 in the village of Meis ( Mansfeld mountain district, province of Saxony ) Elisabeth ( Lisette ) of Veltheim ( born June 22, 1778 in Berlin, † August 22 1807 in Blankenburg ( Harz), Duchy of Braunschweig), the daughter of Karl Christian Septimus Veltheim (1751-1796) and the Albertine Friederike von Pannwitz ( 1758-1789 ). From this marriage two sons and two daughters were born. Otto Wilhelm Henning Ferdinand von Westphalen (1799-1876), the later Prussian Minister of the Interior, Louise Friederike Caroline Ottolie ( called Lisette ) (* October 5, 1800; † August 1, 1863 ), Carl Hans Werner ( * July 22, 1803; † March 8, 1840 ) ( Magistrate ) and Anna Elisabeth Franziska (* May 7, 1807, † April 16, 1896 ).

His second wife he married on April 30, 1812 in Salzwedel ( Province of Saxony ) Caroline Heubel ( born June 20, 1779 Salzwedel, Saxony Province; † July 23, 1856 in Trier, Rhineland ), the daughter of Julius Heubel ( 1742-1818 ) and his cousin Sophie, born Heubel ( 1744-1816 ). From this marriage three children Bertha Julie Jenny (1814-1881), later the wife of Karl Marx (1818-1883), Helen Laura Cecilia Charlotte Friderike originate (* March 16, 1817, † April 3, 1821 ) and Gerhard Ludwig Oscar Edgar von Westphalen ( 1819-1890 ).

Life

Westphalen was trained in Braunschweig at the Collegium Carolinum, the forerunner of today's TU, then still a student in Göttingen among others, Gustav Hugo, Friedrich Ludewig Bouterweck, August Ludwig von Schlozer, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, and Arnold Hermann Ludwig Heeren. He joined the Brunswick civil service in January 1794. Beginning of 1798 he moved with his wife after his paternal inheritance Good Blücher was sold on after Rondeshagen in Ratzeburg. In 1802 he reversed the Good Rondeshagen with an estate in Harms Hagen at Greve mills. In 1804 he gave up its own agricultural operation and stepped back into the Brunswick civil service. The Good Harms Hagen was sold until 1832.

With the establishment of the Napoleonic model State Westphalen 1807, he joined his service in Halberstadt. In the same year his wife Lisette died, only 29 years old. On August 17, 1809, Ludwig was appointed sub-prefect of Salzwedel, where he married in 1812 Caroline Heubel. After Salzwedel was again under Prussian administration, Ludwig von Westphalen was transferred in 1816 to Trier. Here he met his friend Heinrich Marx know. The friendship of the fathers was passed on to the children: Jenny and Edgar von Westphalen and Sophia and Karl Marx. On 3 December 1834 he was retired and received the title of a secret government council. He was awarded the Red Eagle Order 4th class.

Ludwig von Westphalen became the mentor of Karl Marx. His dissertation on " The difference between the demo and Epicurean Philosophy of Nature ," he dedicated to the " dear father's friends" [ ... ] " greets anyone progress of time with the enthusiasm and the prudence of the truth." This dedication illustrates the importance Westphalen for the young Marx, who has spoken often admiringly about the revered father-in later. He was also in 1842 at the deathbed of Louis von Westphalen. The Wedding of Karl and Jenny in 1843 did not live to Ludwig.
