Lugal

Lu.Gal or Lugal is the Sumerian name of the king and means Big Man / Big Man.

The Lugal originally held the second highest office Sumerian and was subordinate to the En. He took the " divine instructions " of En and led the region or the country. Furthermore, he stood before the Ensi, who was responsible for the government of the city.

The title is the first time is in Kish and Ur in connection with Etana. The difference in rank of the offices En and Lugal is illustrated by a quote from the Lugal Kin - gen- ES- dudu beginning of the 24th century BC:

" I practice the Entum over Uruk and the Nam Lugal ( kingship ) in Ur "

The Lugal took in cultic events an observational position, which was supervised by the ensi of each city. When to executive rituals of Lugal was released from Ensi from his passive role and actively involved in the action. Good to see such a scene on the relief plate of the primordial Nanse Lugal of Lagash, on which he symbolically conveys the carrying basket on her head in the sanctuary.

The title Lugal corresponded to the Akkadian language entitled Šarrum.
