Luidja

Luidja is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Kõrgessaare ( Kõrgessaare vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).

Description and History

Luidja ( to German as " dunes [ village ] " ) today 34 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011).

The town is located 22 kilometers southwest of the island's capital Kärdla ( Kertel ), directly on the book by Luidja ( Luidja Laht ).

Popular the Baltic Sea beach is Luidja. A few hundred meters from the village center is an historic windmill from 1872.

Between the villages Luidja and Paope runs a two -kilometer-long black alder plantation. It was built 1904-1908 by a native of Schwerin forester Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Ahrens to halt the advancing of the village dunes stop. The 67.5 hectare area is under conservation since 1962.
