Luigi Carnera

Luigi Carnera ( born April 14, 1875 in Trieste, Italy today; † 30 July 1962 in Florence, Italy ) was an Italian astronomer and discoverer of 16 asteroids ( minor planets ).

In the early years of his career he worked as an assistant to Max Wolf in Heidelberg. From this period date the of him ( in part related to Wolf) discovered asteroids. He worked in Germany, Italy and Argentina, before he finally returned to Italy in 1908.

Carnera took over in 1919 the management of the Observatory of Trieste, which had just been annexed only after the First World War in Italy. Later, in 1932, he became director of the Osservatorio Astronomico di Capodimonte in Naples until his retirement in 1950. Observatory was temporarily occupied during the Second World War by British and American troops to take here a radar station in operation.
