Luigi Ricci (composer)

Luigi Ricci ( born July 8 ( or June ) 1805 probably in Naples, † December 31, 1859 in Prague) was an Italian composer.

Life

The older brother of Federico Ricci joined at the age of nine years to the Conservatory of Naples, where he studied violin and piano with Giovanni Furno Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli and composition with and turned to the suggestion of Pietro Generali of opera buffa. His Opera Chiara di Rosemberg semiseria, which was premiered in 1831 at La Scala, holding on for about ten years in the Schedules. Another success at La Scala was Un'avventura di Scaramuccia. Libretto by Felice Romani with who wrote the librettos for Bellini Most 1836 Ricci accepted the position of maestro di cappella in Trieste. After the failure of his opera seria Le nozze di Figaro, he renounced seven years to the writing of operas and composed songs and church hymns. In addition, he was concertmaster of the Teatro Grande, where he performed the works of his brother and Verdi.

1843 were the twins Franziska ( Fanny ) and Ludmilla ( Lidia ) pride (* 1827) from Prague - whose younger sister Teresa Stolz was later Verdi interpreter and muse - engaged at the Teatro Grande. They accompanied Ricci to Odessa, where he conducted the opera season 1844/45 and more or less openly lived with the twins. From 1847 to 1848, the three people in Copenhagen, where the commitment of the Sisters was canceled by the death of King Christian VIII. After his return to Trieste Luigi Ricci and pride Lidia married in 1849; but went on his ménage à trois. In the fifties, he had again success with La festa di Piedigrotta, which was listed in 1852 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and their Tarantella has remained a popular classic of popular music. After the performance, his last opera Il diavolo a quattro 1859 in Trieste, signs began to show mental disorders. He was taken to a psychiatric clinic in Prague. Here Luigi Ricci died.

Its importance lies mainly in the field of opera buffa, in which he often used folk songs. Ricci was a tireless worker; he left 30 operas and 20 trade fairs. He was the father of Luigino Ricci.
