Luigi Torelli

Count Luigi Torelli ( born February 9, 1810 in Villa di Tirano, † November 14, 1887 in Tirano ) was an Italian officer, prefect and politician.

Life

Torelli studied law at the University of Pavia. In 1848 he took part in Milan on a five-day popular uprising against the Austrians, who were temporarily expelled from the city. Torelli reached a certain celebrity because he had put a leading member of the insurgents, the Italian tricolor on the top of the Duomo in Milan. After the suppression of the rebellion, he went to the neighboring Piedmont, where he became a deputy in 1849 and in addition also an officer in the army there. As such, he took in 1849 and 1859 participated in the Italian wars of unification and received several prestigious awards.

1860 Torelli was appointed Senator and took until 1864 the office of Prefect in different provinces. 1864 and 1865 he became the minister of agriculture, industry and trade, the expansion of trade relations with China. In 1866, he proposed, as prefect of Palermo a revolt, after which it was from 1867 to 1872 Prefect of the Province of Venice. Torelli was also a member of various business associations and scientific and social institutions since 1853.

The Italian Navy later named a submarine after him.
