Luis Ángel González Macchi

Luis Ángel González Macchi ( born December 13, 1947 in Asunción ) is a Paraguayan politician and served as President of Paraguay on 28 March 1999 and 15 August 2003.

González was on 23 March 1999, five days before he was President. Due to the assassination of former Vice President Luis María Argaña Vice President and by the resignation and flight to Brazil of President Raúl Cubas Grau on 28 March 1999, President

As President González tried to form a coalition government in order to secure the participation of the major parties and to have the necessary majority for urgent changes as the economy of Paraguay was by the previous political crises on the ground. But already in 2000 left the radical liberal party this alliance, and Macchi led to only a minority government. Its popularity began to decline, as well as the economic strength of the country. He survived a 2000 first coup attempt in 2001 and an attempt to bring him to justice. He could hold on to the presidency until the regular end. On 4 December 2006 González was sentenced by a Paraguayan court of embezzling millions of dollars to eight years in prison and a fine of 750,000 euros converted. Gonzalez wants to go against the judgment in appeal.
