Luis Delís

Luis Mariano Delis Fournier ( born December 6, 1957 in Guantánamo ) is a retired Cuban discus thrower.

In 1980 he won at the Olympic Games with 66.32 m bronze behind the surprise winner Viktor Raschtschupkin ( 66.64 m) from the Soviet Union and Imrich Bugár ( 66.38 m) from Czechoslovakia. The part in the Olympics in 1980 should remain the only one for delis, because Cuba boycotted the Games in 1984 and 1988.

On May 21, 1983 delis reached in La Habana with 71.06 m personal best that still means Cuban national record in 2006. At the first World Athletics Championships 1983 in Helsinki Delis won with 67.36 m silver behind Imrich Bugár ( 67.72 m) and before the second representative of Czechoslovakia Gejza Valent.

At the 1987 World Championships Jürgen Schult won from the GDR with 68.74 m in front of the American John Powell with 66.22 m. Delis won with 66,02 m bronze with six inches ahead of Rolf Dannebergplatz from the Federal Republic of Germany.

In addition to his three medals at Olympics and World Championships Luis Delis won gold at the Universiade in 1983 and 1985 and at the Pan American Games in 1983 and 1987. 1990 he has been banned for doping for two years.

Luis Delis is 1,85 m tall and weighed about 105 kg competition times. After his career Delis trained, among others, the Olympic champion Maritza Marten.
