Luis Echeverría

Luis Echeverría Álvarez ( born January 17, 1922 in Mexico City) was President of Mexico's 1970 until 1976.

Luis Echeverría is since 1946 a member of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI ). As interior minister, he played a crucial role in the suppression of the student revolts.

Echeverría was not only known for its repressive policies in order to secure the authoritarian rule of the PRI, but also for its integration policy. The journalist John Ross describes this event as follows: " According to tradition, Brezhnev expressed his admiration for the special way in which the PRI exercised its authoritarian rule on soft style. From Echeverría is said, he would have replied: The only difference between our two systems is that, if you have a problem ( with a special group of people note Ross), you subtract when we have a problem, we add. "By subtracting he meant the destruction of opposition people and groups. With adding he meant the PRI policy to make the opposition depends by personal preferential treatment of the system of the governing party.

On 30 June 2006, he was arrested as the main person responsible for the massacre of Tlatelolco ( Matanza de Tlatelolco ) on 2 October 1968, several hundred students of the UNAM, the University of Mexico City, on suspicion of genocide. However, the process has already been set beginning of July 2006 a consequence of experiencing limitation.
