Luis Emilio Recabarren

Luis Emilio Recabarren ( born July 6, 1876 in Valparaíso, † December 19, 1924 in Santiago de Chile) was a Chilean politician and regarded as the founder of the Chilean labor movement.

Life

Recabarren established several working papers, such as " El Trabajo " in his native city of Valparaíso, which he was sentenced to eight months in prison, and in 1905 " La Vanguardia " in Antofagasta, the mining center in northern Chile. In 1906 he was elected for the Partido Demócrata in Congress. Because he refused to be agnostic to swear an oath to God, he was not allowed to take up his mandate. After some time in exile in Argentina and Europe he returned back to Chile in 1908, after which he was sentenced to 18 months in prison. When founded earlier as a progressive movement Partido Demócrata 1912 concluded an electoral alliance with the Conservatives, founded Recabarren in June with nearly 30 comrades in Iquique (along with Antofagasta focus of nitric mining ), the Partido Obrero Socialista (POS ), the Socialist Workers Party. The Party and in 1922 emerged from their Communist Party remained a splinter party to the 30s.

As Recabarren 1918 another exile stay in Argentina ( where he participated in the founding of the Communist Party of Argentina ) to return to Chile, he began to bind Chile's then-leading trade union, the Federación de Obreros de Chile ( FOCH ) to his party. In 1919 he became president of the union and the two organizations merged in effect.

In 1920, Congress approved a name change to the Communist Party of Chile, which, however, took place only after attending the 3rd International 1922. Only under the impression of repression by the dictator Carlos Ibáñez del Campo in 1927 was the inclusion in the Comintern. At this time had FOCH and POS together approximately 200,000 members ( Chile and 4.3 million inhabitants) and the POS two of 118 seats in the House of Representatives.

Shortly after a trip to the Soviet Union in 1924 brought Recabarren to. Manuel Hidalgo was his successor as Chairman of the Communist Party.
