Luis Felipe Areta

Luis Felipe Areta Sampériz aka Pipe ( born March 28, 1942 in Donostia- San Sebastián ) is a Spanish athlete and priest.

Life

International athlete

At 15 he started playing basketball at the Cantabrian club. Later he became interested in athletics and was 13 times Spanish champion in the long jump. He boosted the Spanish record of 7.40 to 7.77 m. He has also delivered 21 top performance in the triple jump of 14.69 m to 16.36 m.

He took part in the Summer Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 and the Olympic Games in 1968 's part in Mexico. In Tokyo, he made the best triple jump with 16.20 meters, but he jumped into the last lap hurt only on the twelfth position. Another injury prevented him from attending the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

Priest

In 1980 he was ordained a priest of Opus Dei, where he served as a numerary since 1959. He works as a teacher and spiritual director at the school Gaztelueta in Bilbao. During his school years at the Colegio Mayor Aralar in Pamplona, he put together a group of amateur musicians singing with the journalist Iñaki Gabilondo.
