FROIS and Oda Nobunaga

Oda took the Christian missionaries to set up an alternative power to the opposition Buddhist sects that were opponents Oda and partly strong private armies ( Sohei ) possessed. Therefore, he allowed the Jesuits after a meeting with FROIS to operate active proselytizing in Kyoto and the surrounding areas. Previously, it was completely permitted only in those areas of Kyushu, the daimyo were even converted to Christianity or economic benefits hoped for by an enhanced onset of trade with the Portuguese.

The first friendly climate between FROIS and Oda cooled with time significantly from, partly because Oda himself refused to convert, partly because he decreed a temple to be built Direction should posthumous worship him as a deity.
