Luis Martins de Souza Dantas

Luís Martins de Souza Dantas ( born February 17, 1876 in Rio de Janeiro, † April 16, 1954 in Paris) was a Brazilian diplomat.

Life

As Brazilian ambassador to France Dantas rescued during the German occupation of France, many of those persecuted by the Nazi regime by the distribution of visas. Here Dantas did not follow the prescribed rules of the Brazilian government. Between June and December 1940, when Souza Dantas was prohibited from continuing to issue visas, he distributed more than 500 visas to the persecuted. Even after the ban Souza Dantas distributed continue now -dated visas. On December 10, 2003, he was honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations.

After his retirement, Souza Dantas was asked to lead the Brazilian delegation at the first General Assembly of the United Nations. He was the first Brazilian who spoke before the United Nations.

Diplomatic career

Luis Martins de Souza Dantas was a Bachelor of Laws from the University of São Paulo. From 1897 to 1899 he was attaché at the embassy in Bern. From 1900 to 1902 he was secretary of legation second class in St. Petersburg, on 1902 to 1908 The same in Rome. From 1908 he was secretary of legation to 1913 first class in Buenos Aires, where he temporarily chargé and April 14, 1915 to January 21, 1916 Envoy Extraordinary and Minister for plénipotentiaire was from 1914. From October 7, 1917 to May 25, 1919, he was ambassador in Rome.

In 1919, de Souza Danta from May 25 to August 14 Envoy Extraordinary and Minister for plénipotentiaire in Brussels, 1916, he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From August 14 1919 to 22 December 1922, he was again ambassador in Rome, and then from December 24, 1922 to March 10, 1943 in Paris and Vichy. From 23 June to 15 November 1916, from 3 to 7 May 1917, he was Brazil's foreign minister. 1924 and 1926 he represented the Brazilian government the League of Nations.

He was chairman of the Brazilian delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations in the Westminster Central Hall in London.

Honors

  • In the library of the National Library of Brazil Luis Martins de Souza Dantas was established, which is dedicated to the exile literature.
