Luís Oliveira Gonçalves

Luís Oliveira Gonçalves ( born June 22, 1960 in Angola) is an Angolan football coach. In his home country he is regarded as a folk hero and is also called the professor because of his tactical skills trainer.

Playing career

As a player, never made it beyond the second Gonçalves Angolan league and could thus achieve any significant success. Among other things, he played at Sportivo Moata y Compania.

Coaching career

Gonçalves coached from 2003 to 2009, the Angolan national football team. Before starting his career, he was initially the coach of the local U-20 national teams. With this team he won the 2001 Under-21 European Championship. After taking over the senior team, he was able to achieve the greatest international success in the history of the Angolan football. In qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2006 Nigeria was allowed behind and was thus the first time to participate in the final competition of the World Cup. As an outsider, they met in the Group D teams from Portugal, Mexico and Iran. Contrary to expectations, showed Gonçalves ' team many tactical finesse and lost in the first game narrowly 0-1 against Portugal. In the other two games the team managed two draws and thus different from a group of third parties. Nevertheless, the Angolans were with their excellent defense work and the rapid counterattack football as one of the positive surprises of the tournament. Also the club loose goalkeeper Joao Ricardo, the Luís Gonçalves had reactivated convinced with good performance. Gonçalves was also the only African coach at this World Cup.
