Luis Palés Matos

Luis Pales Matos ( born March 20, 1898 in Guayama, Puerto Rico, † February 23, 1959 in San Juan, Puerto Rico ) was a Puerto Rican poet who is regarded as an important representative of the Central American and African-American poetry.

Life

Pales Matos made ​​his literary debut as a poet as a teenager in 1915 with the poetry collection Azaleas. In 1937 he published with tuntun de pasa y griferia his most famous poem. Last appeared with Poesía, 1915-56 in 1957 a collection of his most significant lyrical works.

Shortly before his death he was a lecturer at the University of Puerto Rico. However, this teaching, he was able to exert only a few weeks before he died of heart failure.
