Luitgard

Luitgard (* 776, † June 4 800 in Tours ) was the fifth and last wife of Emperor (from December 25th 800 ) Charlemagne.

Luitgard was an Alemannic princess, daughter of Luitfrid II from the Sundgau and Hiltrude of Wormsgau. She was married to 794 Charlemagne, after his previous wife had died Fastrada. Little is known of her, except she is a very quiet and virtuous woman was politically and remained in the background. She was very well read and contacts with numerous scholars of their time in the correspondence. In particular, Alcuin, English scholar and adviser of Charlemagne, Luitgard boasted of their love for letters. Luitgard gave birth to her husband, no children and died after five years of marriage in Saint -Martin Monastery in Tours. Her husband has married no more time. In memory of his wife, Charlemagne had a monastery in Cormery build at Tours.
