Luiz Gonzaga Dam

The Itaparica Dam is a large dam with a hydroelectric plant on the São Francisco in Itaparica and Afonso Paolo in Brazil. Another name of the dam is Luiz Gonzaga.

The dam was built by the Companhia do Vale do São Hidrelectrica Francisco ( CHESF ). The shut-off is made of earth and rock fill and is 105 m high and 4700 m long.

The reservoir is located on the border of the states of Bahia and Pernambuco. Further up on the Sao Francisco is the Sobradinho reservoir.

Protests and resettlement

The dam project was controversial because 40,000 to 50,000 people had to be resettled. When, in February 1988 began the impounding, all families were moved to new settlements, where they were given new apartments or alternatively cash payments.
