Luka Sorkočević

Luka Sorkočević, Luca Sorgo, ( born January 13, 1734 Dubrovnik ( Ragusa), then an independent republic; † September 11, 1789 in Dubrovnik) was a diplomat and composer.

Luka Sorkočević was born the son of a noble family in Dubrovnik. He received his first music lessons in the context of the Jesuit College of the City and of Giuseppe Valenti, who was from 1750 to 1761 Director of Music of the Cathedral. Then Sorkočević continued his musical studies in Rome at Rinaldo di Capua.

In 1752 he was elected Maggior consiglio of the Republic of Dubrovnik, in this office he remained until his death. As a diplomat he represented in 1781 during a few months Dubrovnik at the Viennese court and he became friends with Joseph Haydn and Christoph Willibald Gluck.

His compositions, of which only twelve have been preserved - including eight symphonies - were probably written 1750-1770. His son Antun Sorkočević (1775-1841, Paris ) also worked as a diplomat and composer.
