Lukhovitsy

Lukhovitsy (Russian Луховицы ) is a city in Russia with a population of 29,850 (as of October 14, 2010 ). It is located away from the nearest big city Kolomna in the southeastern Moscow Oblast, about 135 km from Moscow and 22 km.

History

The place was first written records about 1595. At that time the village was called Gluchowitschi and belonged to the Archbishop Ryazan. In the following centuries the town was predominantly agricultural. The relatively favorable position between Moscow and Ryazan favored the export of agricultural products to Moscow.

Of greater importance was the place with the laying of the railway line Moscow - Ryazan, which also runs through Lukhovitsy, in the 1860s.

In the course of municipal reform in the 1920s and 1930s some surrounding villages were connected to Lukhovitsy and 1931, the same Rajon formed, became its administrative center Lukhovitsy. Since 1957 the city has Lukhovitsy status.

Economy and Transport

In the city of today, there are several industries, including an engineering factory, a brick factory and a number of food and textile companies. In the surroundings of the town before main activity is agriculture, also there are sand, clay, limestone and peat deposits.

Traffic Technically Lukhovitsy is connected to the trunk road M5. On the railway line Moscow - Ryazan -Kazan, the city has a regional station, among others with direct links to the Moscow Kazan Railway Station. It also exists a disused branch line between Lukhovitsy and about 20 km from the city Zaraysk.

In Lukhovitsy a military airfield, which 150 is in connection with the development of the fighter aircraft Alexeyev exists.

Attractions

In Lukhovitsy itself, built in 1754 the Mother of God of Kazan Church - is the most famous building. 2007 Lukhovitsy celebrated its 50th anniversary as a city. For this reason, among others, a memorial to the cucumber was erected in the city, those vegetables that is often grown traditionally used by the farmers of the surrounding area.

In the vicinity there are several attractions, including the village Dedinowo 11 km northeast along the river Oka Luchowizys: There had been one of the first shipbuilding yards of Russia in the 17th century.
