The Lukmanierpass (Italian Lukmanierpass, Romansh: Pass dil Lucmagn? / I ), 1,915 m above sea level. M., is a Swiss mountain pass on the border between the cantons of Graubünden (municipality Medel ) and Ticino ( Olivone village in the municipality Blenio). The name derives from the Latin lucus magnus, the " big woods ".

Geography

The road from Disentis through the Val Medel to the pass and reached its culmination on actual 1,972 m above sea. M. in the gallery north of the pass. Southward it passes through the Bleniotal to Biasca. The Lukmanierpass separates the Gotthard massif of the Adula Alps. On the Lukmanierpass the European watershed runs. The Lukmanierpass offers the only way to cross the Swiss Alps by car ( in the sense of a north-south crossing ), without exceeding the altitude of over 2000 meters.

History

The discovery of a Roman coin hoard in Malvaglia suggests that the pass was already committed at that time. His first blossom time was in the Frankish Empire, the Disentis Monastery was founded as the beginning of the 8th century. In the High and Late Middle Ages, especially at the time of the Hohenstaufen, was the Lukmanier as a main north -south links in Switzerland, then lost this role to Gotthard and Splügenpass which compensate the disadvantage of about 200 m higher culmination of more direct lines. 1374 set up the monastery below the summit of a St. Mary consecrated hospice. 1964 gave way to the dam and hospice chapel. Both were rebuilt on the pass road. The new hospital was inaugurated on 1 August 1965. The chapel was funded by the NOK, it was inaugurated in 1967.

Mid-19th century, times preferred in the line choice for an alpine path between the German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino the Lukmanier route that would be done without expensive summit tunnel, but decided in 1869 in favor of the Gotthard Railway by the Reuss valley and the Leventina. Although 1872 (Graubünden ) or 1877 (Ticino ) is a modern carriage road was opened over the Lukmanier, decreased the importance of the pass, the opportunities provided by the construction of the Gotthard highway with the 1980 Gotthard road tunnel had finally had its day as a national transport corridor. In connection with the investment of the dam Lai da Sontga Maria (power plants Anterior Rhine ) on the Grisons side of the road was laid in the 1960s in a gallery.

After the pass was closed in winter since 1980 and the cantons refused to take on 700,000 francs annual estimated cost of winter maintenance, constituted itself - mainly on the initiative of the municipality of Disentis and the mountain railways in the Surselva - the club pro Lucmagn. After a five- year trial phase, the project supported by the association of the longest winter open attitude was extended for a further five years until 2010 and from 2011 on time.

Varia

The Central Swiss power plants took advantage of the low pass to build the Lukmanier line, a 380 kV high voltage line over the Alps. Since the line is older than the reservoir, a mast was set to 28 meters high concrete stilts that are in the lake in the middle - a costly, requiring authorization routing the cable could be waived.

From the pass you can over the Passo dell ' Uomo ( 2'218 m above sea level. M. ) migrate into the Val Piora, located at the end of the reservoir Lago Ritom.
